Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah took more than 12 years to complete.
Ghulam Mohammed, the music director of Pakeezah never lived to
see the success of this film, it was sad that he did not get his due
in the Hindi Film Industry in spite of brilliant work in films like
Mirza Ghalib (1954) and Shama (1961).
Kamal Amrohi had approached Dharmendra to play Salim Ahmed
Khan’s character which eventually went to Raaj Kumar.
Meena Kumari’s not so good health insisted that some of the
dance sequences and scenes should be shot without her.
Amrohi shot the entire song “Chalo dildaar chalo”
without showing her face. |

Dharmendra in his youth was such a big fan of actress
Suraiya and Dilip Kumar that he walked miles to watch their films.
He saw Suraiya’s “Dillagi” (1949) over & over more than 30 times.
And as destiny plays games, after many years Dharmendra acted
in a film along with Hema Malini titled “Dillagi” in 1978 and recently
both his sons acted in a film with the same title “Dillagi” yet again in
their home production in 1999. |

Crisis and dead-locks
when they occur,
have at least this advantage
– They force us to think. |
